Inspire – High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?
Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
High expectations are embedded in every classroom at Weston. Through the consistent implementation of Explicit Teaching practices, teachers clearly articulate learning intentions, success criteria and high-quality models, ensuring students understand what excellence looks like and how to achieve it. This structured approach benefits all learners while providing high-potential students with the challenge, pace and depth required to progress beyond year-level expectations.
Teachers regularly use data to identify high potential early and to adjust instruction through differentiation, extension tasks and targeted feedback. Students demonstrating advanced understanding are encouraged to think critically, apply knowledge creatively and set ambitious personal learning goals. This culture of high expectations ensures that high-achieving students are continually challenged, supported and motivated to reach their full potential.
Weston Public School provides rich, school-wide opportunities for high potential and gifted students to shine. Our technology programs are a key strength, offering students access to coding, robotics and 3D design and printing. These programs promote problem-solving, innovation and creativity, allowing students with strengths in STEM to extend their skills through authentic, hands-on learning experiences.
High potential students with advanced technological skills are further supported through our Tekspert Program, which identifies capable students and empowers them to assist in maintaining and supporting the school’s technological infrastructure. Through this program, students develop leadership, responsibility and real-world problem-solving skills while applying their technical knowledge in meaningful, practical contexts.
Our music program also plays a vital role in talent development, offering instruction in guitar, drums, percussion and bass. Students with musical aptitude are given opportunities to refine their skills, collaborate with peers and progress to more advanced learning, supporting both creative expression and discipline-specific excellence.
In addition, our Gardening Club provides hands-on learning opportunities for students with interests in sustainability, science and environmental stewardship. High potential students are encouraged to take leadership roles, design projects, problem-solve and apply scientific thinking in real-world contexts. This program supports creative and intellectual growth while fostering responsibility, collaboration and wellbeing.
Across all settings, our clear school-wide expectations and strong wellbeing framework ensure that high potential students are supported socially and emotionally. Staff maintain a proactive and ongoing focus on identifying and nurturing high potential, ensuring students are recognised, valued and provided with meaningful opportunities to grow.
Weston Public School’s HPGE practices are closely aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s commitment to equity, excellence and talent development. We recognise that high potential can be demonstrated at different times and in different ways, and we actively work to identify students from all backgrounds.
Our approach reflects NSW HPGE priorities by:
- Identifying high potential early and systematically
- Providing differentiated learning experiences that enable talent development
- Monitoring student progress to ensure continued growth
- Creating inclusive learning environments where high potential is nurtured across multiple domains
Through strong classroom practice, innovative school-wide programs and alignment with NSW expectations, Weston Public School is dedicated to developing confident, capable and high-achieving learners who are supported to excel—now and into the future.
