Debating

At Weston Public School, we are passionate about fostering confident communicators and critical thinkers through our debating and public speaking programs.

Our school proudly hosts three debating teams comprised of enthusiastic students from Years 4, 5, and 6. These teams participate in local gala days, competing against other schools within our Learning Management Group (LMG). Guided by Miss Mackay and Mrs. Hanson, who also coordinate the LMG Debating Competition, our teams engage in rigorous preparation, developing their skills in constructing arguments, rebuttals, and persuasive communication. Debating at Weston not only strengthens students' ability to think critically and speak persuasively but also fosters teamwork, resilience, and the confidence to express ideas in front of an audience.

In addition to debating, Weston Public School holds yearly public speaking competitions, open to all students. These competitions celebrate the art of effective communication, giving students the opportunity to refine their speaking skills, structure their ideas clearly, and captivate an audience. Through public speaking, students learn to articulate their thoughts with clarity and confidence, overcome the fear of speaking in front of others, and build essential life skills such as leadership and self-expression.

By participating in both debating and public speaking, Weston students develop a strong foundation in critical thinking, active listening, and articulate communication—skills that will benefit them throughout their schooling and beyond. We are proud to nurture these future leaders and empower them to use their voices to make a difference.
